2017 Red Ribbon Gala and Its Success

Last year’s First Annual Red Ribbon Gala was held at the Casa Karma Boutique Hotel in Conchas Chinas and attracted 120 guests, selling out all the tickets a week in advance. The event was extremely successfully, raising more than $250,000 pesos. Several notable local chefs and restauranteurs provided food and libations via interactive food stations. A fantastic group of singers and performers entertained those gathered, featuring Amy Armstrong from The Palm Cabaret.

In the months since, and based on the success of that event, we have been able to:

  • Open “THE SETAC LGBTQ Wellness Center Puerto Vallarta”
  • Expand the scope of our services–we have brought on a full-time doctor, a full-time psychologist, and an alternative therapist to provide more services like HIV 4th generation test for early detection and a rapid test for other STD´s that can be treated on site by our doctor
  • And we are now one of only TWO locations in all of Mexico offering pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medication for free to local residents via a grant from the United Nations!

Plans for 2018 Red Ribbon Gala

This year’s Second Annual Red Ribbon Gala event will be held at Mantamar Beach Club on Playa Los Muertos on Wednesday, December 5 at 6:00-10:00 p.m. With the much larger venue, up to 250 guests will be able to enjoy the sunset right on the beach!

Red Ribbon Gala Puerto Vallarta Setac - Tom Viola

The SETAC Community Center is holding its second annual Red Ribbon Gala at Mantamar Beach Club on Wednesday, December 5. Tom Viola, executive director of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS arranged for two highly-talented Broadway performers to come entertain the crowd at the Gala. Event organizer Robert Schley from Mexico Event Design recently interviewed Mr. Viola in-depth about his organization and their commitment to the local Puerto Vallarta community.

How long have you been active with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS?

I’ve been a part of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS since its inception. In 1988, with many of its own members facing dire circumstances, the Council of Actors’ Equity–the union for actors and stage managers–set out to fight HIV and AIDS within its own community. Equity Fights AIDS was created as a committee of Actors’ Equity.
